Sam Phillips, der Gründer von Sun-Records und Entdecker von Elvis, sagte einmal, dass aus seiner Sicht "das Schreiben und Singen von Liedern, die größte befreiende Kraft für den Geist des Menschen sei. Memphis entstand aus einer reichhaltigen Mischung von schwarzer und weißer Landbevölkerung aus dem Mississippi Delta und den Farmen und Wäldern von Tennessee und Alabama. Memphis ist ein ganz besonderer Ort: Die Heimat von stolzen, jedoch bescheidenen und freundlichen, aber bestimmten Menschen. Nach der großen Mississippi-Flut von 1927 und der Weltwirtschaftskrise, hatten die Schwarzen und die armen Weißen kaum Einnahmen. Ihre Not äußerte sich in Liedern, die gleichzeitig auch ein bisschen Hoffnung auf die Verwirklichung ihrer kaum fassbaren Träume erahnen ließen. All das offenbarte sich mir und ich 'wagte den Anfang'! Wohin uns das alles führen sollte, wusste ich jedoch nicht"!
Phillips spürte die spirituelle Kraft der Musik. Er brauchte jetzt Kontakt zu Musikern – und er brauchte Kapital: 1950 beschloss er, ein altes Geschäftsgebäude auf der Union Avenue zu mieten und eröffnete dort den ersten Aufnahme-Service von Memphis, Tennessee. Das Motto: "we record anything – anywhere – anytime". So nahm zum Beispiel der spätere König des Rock 'n' Roll hier ein Lied für seine Mutter auf. Zwischen Geburtstagswünschen und Firmensitzungen nahm Phillips Blues-Musiker aus dem Mississippi Delta und aus Memphis auf. Zusammen mit dem Talentscout und Bandleader Ike Turner entdeckte er B.B. King, Howlin‘ Wolf, Rufus Thomas und viele andere. Er verkaufte die Aufnahmen an etablierte Independent-Labels wie Chess in Chicago. Eine dieser Aufnahmen, Rocket 88 von Jackie Brenston mit Ike Turner und seinen Kings of Rhythm, kam auf Chess bis an die Spitze der R&B-Charts und wird heute von vielen Kritikern als erste Rock 'n' Roll-Platte angesehen. Phillips sah nun nicht nur das Potential, sondern auch die Wirkung. Er beschloss, sein eigenes Label zu gründen: Sun-Records. Er nahm jetzt auch Country auf – eine Musik, die nie wirklich die seine war. Doch er bekam eine Idee: Ein weißer Sänger, der die Emotionalität und den Rhythmus des Blues für ein weißes Publikum zugänglich macht, wäre der Schlüssel zu übergreifendem Erfolg. Er erinnerte sich an den Jungen, der die Single für seine Mutter aufgenommen hatte: Elvis.
Doch selbst DIE Entdeckung Elvis war nicht der Höhepunkt des kleinen Labels, sondern die eigentliche Initialzündung: Jetzt kamen Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison und Jerry Lee Lewis – seine Entdeckungen – und eine Schar von musikalischen Wilden, damals nicht erfolgreich und heute unbekannt, in denen Sam Phillips Leidenschaft und Sehnsucht spürte - und die Suche nach neuen Wegen. "Kannst du dir Johnny Cash mit einer Steel-Gitarre vorstellen?" So provozierte Sam Phillips einmal mit vernichtendem Tonfall. Er sagte seinen Künstlern gerne: "Wenn ihr nichts anders macht, macht ihr gar nichts". Phillips erschuf einen typischen homogenen Sound und Stil, der all diese Individualisten gut verpackt präsentierte: Den Sun-Sound. Er erklärte später mal: "Alles was ich aufnahm, brauchte dieses gewisse Bauch-Gefühl: Egal ob Blues, Country, Gospel oder Rockabilly. Ich wollte sie dazu bringen, ihr eigenes Ding aufzunehmen und ihr Innerstes hervor zu bringen."
Sam Phillips hat es hervor gebracht. Und er presste es auf kleine gelbe Sun-Singles, damit der Rest der Welt es auch mitbekommt.
Zwischen 1950 und 1960 entdeckte und produzierte Sam Phillips, Gründer von Sun Records, B.B. KING, HOWLIN' WOLF, IKE TURNER, ELVIS PRESLEY, JOHNNY CASH, CARL PERKINS, JERRY LEE LEWIS, CHARLIE RICH und ROY ORBISON – Künstler, die die Geschichte der Popmusik veränderten. Er erledigte dies mit Hilfe von nur ein oder zwei Angestellten in einem Studio, das sich in einem kleinen Laden in Memphis, Tennessee, befand.
Zu den anderen Künstlern, die ihre ersten Aufnahmen bei Sun machten, gehören RUFUS THOMAS, BOBBY BLAND, JUNIOR PARKER, LITTLE MILTON, CONWAY TWITTY, CHARLEY PRIDE und viele andere!
Nachdem er 1952 mit Jackie Brenstons Rocket 88 einen der größten Hits der Prä-Rock 'n' Roll-Ära produziert hatte, startete Sam Phillips Sun Records mit einer einzigen lokalen Veröffentlichung und ließ anschließend das Label für ein Jahr ruhen. 1953 dann wurde das Sun-Label wiederbelebt und veröffentlichte Singles bis zur Schließung im Jahr 1968.
