Obverse description: Diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Arcadius right, seen from three-quarters forward (A'a); beaded tiara.

Obverse translation: “Dominus Noster Arcadius Pius Felix Augustus”, (Our Lord Arcadius pious happy august).

Reverse legend: VOT/ X/ MVLT/ XX// [AN]S.

Reverse description: within a crown in four lines.

Reverse translation: “Votis decennalibus multis vicennanlibus”, (Vows for the tenth anniversary of reign and more for the twentieth anniversary to come).

Comment about this item: Light weight. History: Arcadius was born in 377. Proclaimed august by his father on January 19, 383, he inherited the East after the death of Theodosius I. The emperor, weak, left ruling Rufinus the prefect of the Praetorium and Eutrope, a eunuch of the palace. Empress Eudoxia had considerable influence over the emperor, and military power was in the hands of Gaïnas, a Goth. In 402 Arcadius associated his son, Theodosius II, born the previous year and a falling out ensued with Honorius. Arcadius died in 408, aged 30.
