The pendant for this necklace is a pipe measuring: 6.3 x 4.3 x 3.5 cm. (2 1/2" x 1 3/4" x 1 3/8"), that I made from a vegetable, palm ivory, tagua nut I hand finished.
On the front I inlaid a 25 x 18 mm. green, moss agate cabochon.
On the back is the pipe.
The pipe's bowl measures: 2.3 x 1.8 cm. (7/8" x 5/8").
From the mouthpiece to the center of the bowl measures: 4.2 cm. (1 5/8").
The bore is approximately .5 cm (1/4").
I filled any small cracks inside, due to germination, with non-toxic bentonnite clay.
Like a Meershaum pipe, the tagua nut will absorb the tars released from smoking, and will become a dark, honey color with use.
For the neckpiece, I strung faceted, aventurine ovals; tiger's eye, moss agate, and bone rounds; pearls; and small glass crow beads; all on 7-strand beading wire knotted to 4 strands of sturdy, artificial sinew that I twisted into cordage, using an ancient, hunter-gathers' technique.
The length is adjustable, from: 30 cm. (11 3/4"), up to: up to 116 cm. (45 1/2").
Just slip it over your head and slide the tagua nut, lock bead to desired length.
This necklace is made for people of all sizes to wear any length.
If you would like it shorter, you can specify the length desired at time of purchase (no less than 60 cm. or 24" so it will still fit over your head), and I can easily shorten it.
The necklace also comes with extra screens and a storage pouch for safe keeping.
Tagua nuts are a renewable product of the rain forests of Central and South America.
They are a viable alternative to animal ivory.
The last picture shows a raw tagua nut, so you have a better idea what I start with.
Each nut has its own unique pattern, similar to a fingerprint.
