value of the metal in German coinage rose above face value causing
widespread hoarding. And due to inflation, the central bank
couldn’t provide a necessary supply of currency notes. To ease coin and
paper money shortages, and enable daily commerce, towns, local banks and
private companies issued “emergency” Notgelds of various denominations.
These colorful, illustrated notes feature village life and architecture,
local landmarks, figures of folklore and more. Some
of the images are shocking, some are humorous, some are touching - each
city did its best to tickle the fancy of the collector, so the notes
would be treasured and never redeemed .That is the reason why the most
of the notgeld banknotes are in Uncirculated aUNC/UNC condition.
