A nice example of a original
World War One
Imperial German Army Issue
'KronPrinz'
Boxed Pipe Kit
(Tabak-Pfeife)
uncovered recently in Belgium on the former
Ypres Salient of 1914-18
Complete with a
1914-dated 5 Reichspfennig coin
found within, the attractive cardboard box includes the wooden
pipe bowls, which would then be affixed, Tyrolean style, to disposable stems that were
bought separately from the German Troop's own mess or field (PK) shop.
The large pipe bowl retains its protective wind-flap,
which offered an additional security in stopping the smoker's sparks
being observed from the British Trenches.
(We originally thought it was a box of two pipes but we
are indebted to a kind eBayer who sent us the following message: )
You have one pipe here, not two.
The pipe bowl (with wind cap) fits into the
left hand socket (as pictured) of the lower section.
The lower section is a spit trap.
The stem with mouth piece fits into the right
hand socket.
Measuring approx 5.5" x 1.5" x 1.75"
and produced in Thuringia, Germany,
the cardboard carton, which is in remarkable condition
and completely undamaged, features an image of
The Imperial German Crown Prince
on one side and a Landser (Soldier) on the other
and with the Imperial German
double-headed eagle on the top flap.
Still retaining much of the original packing paper within, this wee kit
is a lovely surviving & personal item from
The German Ypres
Salient of the Great War..
Part of an on-going acquisition of
a fascinating militaria collection of
British, German & French
Great War Barn-found & Trench Dug
artefacts from
The Somme, Verdun & Arras in France
and from the
Ypres Salient of Belgium
that was carefully built up & curated over a 40-year period.
Thanks for looking..!
