This is a piece of 5/8 inch diameter x 96 feet of braided Polyester type rope. It was most likely used for a towing or mooring line for a sailboat or fishing boat. It would work great for re use decoration. It would look great hanging on a porch, fence, or a room with a nautical or maritime theme. We sell a lot of this for museum props and nautical displays. It also could be used for tying off a boat or tying loads down.
