James Russell Lowell (1819-1891) American poet, critic, editor of The Atlantic Monthly, and diplomat; one of the first American authors who rivaled the popularity of British poets and one of the few New England poets praised by Edgar Allan Poe. The two corresponded frequently between 1842-1844.
