KOROND Flower Pot Clay Planter Hand Thrown & Carved Signed VTG Romanian Medium

Korond / Corund is a well known pottery hub in the heart of Transylvania, Romania, dating back to the 1600's. Although it is unclear how pottery began in Korond, legend has it that the art was handed down to them divinely, and it started when the world began. The pottery began as a strict hand-made trade and only began to use the electric potter’s wheel in 2015. The entire process of making and decorating pottery in Korond is done by hand. Not only does this guarantee that each piece of pottery is unique, but it also shows how dearly the Korond potters hold their traditions.

These terracotta flower pots are at least 22 years old but were never used. Please see the provenance explanation below. For reference, they are the size of the medium pot in pic 3. Look for the other 2 sizes (or other styles) in our store.

There are only 4 such (large) pieces in our store, carved in 4 different patterns numbered accordingly as per 2nd pic. We only have 1 piece in each pattern.

At purchase time please send us a message with the pattern(s) of your choice, to secure your preferred pattern - again, we only have 1 piece in each pattern. If no message is received within 12 hours post purchase (we must ship the next day), we will select a random pattern ourselves.

Because they were 100% hand thrown and carved, they will feature pattern, finish, and measurement irregularities & inconsistencies, but no chips or cracks.

The pots' measurements range as follows: Height: 6.75"; Top Diameter: 8.75" - 9.5"; Weight: 2lb 4oz - 2lb 12oz.

The detail pics belong to pattern #1, and they are only meant to represent a general idea of what the finish looks like. Most pots are signed / marked on the bottom, but a couple got away without a mark.

Always use an underplate with these pots. Water will seep and stain the surface underneath.

Also, given their light, bisque finish, it is recommended to keep these in a more sheltered area, and to use a liner (e.g., plastic or a trash bag) inside the pot. Ensure liner's bottom is perforated.

**** About the provenance of this item ****

This item is part of a group of hand made textiles, hand carved wood, hand blown glass, and hand made ceramics that was acquired about 23 years ago from Romania (most from the Transylvania region) for a store our family operated in Ohio. Eventually, the store closed, and all remaining merchandise ended up boxed up in storage in a relative's climate controlled warehouse, until our eBay store received them just recently. While we may have more than just one piece of a certain style, for the most part: 1. they will be only a few at best; 2. each of them will be unique; 3. once they are gone they cannot be replenished. All these items reflect, one way or another, some aspect of the Romanian cultural heritage - and its appreciation for the creativity, uniqueness, imperfections and charm of hand crafted wares over the monotony and volumes of the assembly lines.
