antique early australian solid timber fiddle back tall boy large set of drawers. I’d say these days around 1860.

The pictures don’t do these justice. Gorgeous timber with amazing grain. The colour of the timber just glows and the flame patterns flicker in the light. Nogg th sure if the timber but I’d think it would be Australian. No signs of mechanical tools used.

The sides, handles, corners, top and feet are solid timber with an amazing grain pattern. I don’t know what timber it is.

The drawer fronts are a thick fiddle back veneer on top of cedar. The thickness of veneer and the hand cut dove tail joints tell you it’s an early piece.

The drawers are cedar. No pine in these drawers. These are a high end piece not cheaply made like a lot of the cedar drawers.

No borers as it’s all cedar and made of Timbers they don’t eat. There are some big holes in one of the drawers from ancient bugs that are in the unseasoned timber

And eat out of a bit of sapwood. They are long gone and I’ve not seen any holes anywhere else. These were in the drawer when I got it.

I’ve had these 30 years and they have been used so there are scratches and dings and marks consistent with age. Generally they are in fab condition.

I had some sympathetic restoration work done on them 20 years ago by a master furniture restoration expert who fixed all the drawer runners and stops and fixed a separation crack on the top. He repolished them but has not overdone the restoration. They look old still but just good condition. He was old then and retired after doing these so would be passed by now. He did an amazing job as you can’t see where the crack was on the top and they don’t look restored.

The main current damage is pictured. I had two successive ex husbands that weren’t careful with them so damaged them. There are two veneer chips which can be fixed if they bother you.

A couple of dark rings on the top that don’t really stand out too much. A small scratch on one drawer front that can be covered with a bit of tinted scratch cover wax.

I love these understated early Australian pieces as they are almost shaker looking and very nice in todays eclectic interiors. Haven’t got room for these anymore and would rather have money towards roof repairs on my house. I’d like them to go to someone that will take care of them and enjoy them as much as I have.

They are a great size and shape for a large house as they are nearly square and have nice sized drawers. Lovely squashed ball feet with great grain in the turned solid timber.
