With his full titles: Grand Duke Friedrich August Heir to Norway, Duke of Schleswig, Holstein, Stormarn, the Dithmarschen and Oldenburg, Prince of Lübeck and Birkenfeld, Lord of Jever and Kniphausen. He was born the eldest son of Grand Duke Nicholas Frederick Peter of Oldenburg and Elisabeth, née Princess of Saxe-Altenburg. His younger brother was Georg Ludwig.
