HORATIO STEBBINS (1821-1902) was an important Unitarian clergyman who succeeded Thomas S. King as pastor of the Unitarian Church in San Francisco.  He was a leader in the formation of the University of California, Stanford University and Lick Observatory.

Stebbins adamantly opposed excluding Chinese, which was a strong prejudice of the day. He embarrassed California’s governor and ex-governor at an elegant dinner for holding anti-Chinese positions, calling it “rag-tag and bobtail. If any of your cheap politicians have won a penny by it...beware when you put that penny in your purse, lest the eagle on the reverse side of the coin sticks his talons through and scratches the face of Liberty.”
