Jock Lowe is a distinguished former senior Concorde pilot and Director of Flight Operations for British Airways. He was elected as Master of the Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators, a Livery Company of the City of London in 2005.


Born in 1944, William Dennis 'Jock' Lowe was educated in the north east at Chester-le-Street and then at the University of Birmingham, where he was awarded a PhD in 1969 and an Honorary Doctorate in 2003 for his services to aviation.


On joining British Airways in 1970 he flew VC10s for six years. He then joined the Concorde fleet on the first British Airways training course in 1976 and maintained his association with the supersonic aircraft as a Training Instructor and Captain for the next 25 years, making him Concorde’s longest serving pilot. For a four-year period from 1982 to 1986 he was also Concorde Resource Manager, responsible for pricing and cost control.


From 1986 to 89, Jock served as General Manager Operations Control, responsible for the day to day operation of the entire British Airways fleet of 300 aircraft worldwide; during which time he was additionally responsible for the operational integration of British Airways and British Caledonian at Gatwick following the merger in 1988.


He became Chief Pilot on the DC10, TriStar and Concorde fleets and by 1992, was the Chief Pilot of British Airways and Director of Flight Operations, a post he held for four years. While in the post, he was Chairman of the UK Flight Operations Directors’ Liaison Group.


He returned to Concorde management in 1996 in charge of all its commercial activities, and was responsible for the profitability of the supersonic fleet. He became a familiar face and voice through his numerous appearances on TV and radio and in press interviews as well as giving regular lectures.


His logbook records over 5,000 hours of flying experience on Concorde and over 2,000 hours on smaller general aviation aircraft.
