UPS Standard to Canada,The RF16 epitomized Baldwin's "Shark-nose" design. It was featured exclusively on the model during its four-year production run before the builder ended domestic production of diesel locomotives.
Meant for use in freight service, and in competition against Electro-Motive's F series and the American Locomotive Co. (Alco) FA, it was the best-selling cab unit Baldwin built with more than 150 units outshopped. The RF16 was also the only cab design cataloged as part of Baldwin's Standard Line built for freight service by the Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton Corporation between 1950 and 1953.
Today, two RF16s survive, stored away at short line Escanaba & Lake Superior in Michigan. The railroad's owner states they will eventually be donated to a museum. The RF16 began production in November of 1950 featuring the company's latest 608A prime mover capable of producing 1,600 horsepower.
Businessmen in Chicago were interested in the new technology of railroads and made preparations to build a new line. This railway would consist of 75 miles of track and connect LaSalle, Illinois with Rock Island, Illinois. Fifteen years before the Civil War, the Rock Island line was born.
The fabled Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad was a legend in its own time. A Mighty Fine Line was immortalized in song when Clarence Wilson, a member of the Rock Island's Colored Booster Quartet (an employee choir group from the railroad's Biddle Shops in Little Rock, Arkansas) wrote "Rock Island Line" in 1929. A few different versions sprang up in the succeeding years, the most famous of which was recorded by icon Johnny Cash in 1970.
The Rock never "ran down into New Orleans" as Mr. Cash sang and struggled after the company's greatest leader, John D. Farrington, retired. In 1964, a merger was agreed upon with Union Pacific to assure the Rock's survival. Alas, there was much opposition to this union and as the Interstate Commerce Commission dragged its feet the railroad physically collapsed. This exemplifies the wonders of bureaucratic regulation, the government bureaucrats with safe guaranteed jobs destroying the businesses and jobs of those whom it regulates.
In late 1974, when the agency finally gave its blessing UP was no longer interested. With few options left the Rock Island entered bankruptcy and was liquidated in 1980. In one of the industry's great ironies, most of the railroad's principal routes survive as prosperous assets today. Needless to say, some friend of the ICC regulators got a great deal and made millions simply by having the right friends in government.

For our international customers: YES!! we do combine shipping. The most economical way for you to buy multiple items from us is for you to send us a list of the items you want to buy. Do not purchase them as they are listed!! (This leads to higher than necessary fees & shipping.) Send us a complete list of all the items you want. Then we will cancel the listings for the items and turn them into a special listing just for you (We'll send you the listing named before making it active). It will have your full purchase with the correct shipping box size and weight. This saves you on the international fees & shipping.
