This historical map of
the Eastern Mediterranean illustrates the journey of Aeneas, a legendary hero
in both Greek and Roman mythology. Aeneas was a defender of Troy who led the
survivors of the Trojan War to Italy, wandering the seas for seven years and enduring
many adventures and hardships. According to Roman versions of the myth, Aeneas
and his followers founded Rome, and he became its first great hero and
legendary father. The map is illustrated with sailing ships, including a scene
of the fleet caught in a fierce storm. At upper right is a large inset map
centered on Greece, titled Ulyssis Errores that illustrates the Wanderings of
Odysseus.
