GlyNAC
New research has found that supplementing older people with
GlyNAC ? a combination of glycine and N-acetylcysteine ? wards off several key
indicators of aging and keeps people healthier as they age. Not only that, but
older people also appeared to be fitter and stronger with slimmer waistlines
after taking the GlyNAC supplement.
As reported in the Journals of Gerontology Series A, scientists
at Baylor College of Medicine studied the effect of GlyNAC supplementation on
24 older adults and 12 younger people in a randomized, double-blind human
clinical trial.
After 16 weeks, the GlyNAC supplementation was found to be
associated with a host of benefits for key hallmarks of aging and
age-associated defects. This included oxidative stress, glutathione deficiency,
mitochondrial dysfunction, mitophagy, inflammation, insulin resistance,
endothelial dysfunction, genomic damage, stem cell fatigue, and cellular
senescence. Meanwhile, no improvements were seen in those receiving a placebo.
In turn, the older people who received doses of GlyNAC acquired
stronger muscles, lower blood pressure, and smaller waist measurements. They
could exercise harder, and their walking speed improved, which is a
surprisingly good indication of ill-health in old age.
The researchers explain that the key to GlyNAC?s benefits lies
in its ability to restore mitochondrial health and the correction of oxidative
stress.
NAC
Health Benefits of NAC or N
Acetylcysteine:
Improves Lung Health
NAC is often used to help fight long-term lung damage in those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). According to Lipman, ?NAC replenishes glutathione levels in the lungs, decreases inflammation in the lungs and bronchi and loosens mucus in the airways.?
Strengthens Immune Health
Research
shows promising results that NAC may improve immune function by killing viral
cells or blocking their replication. A recent study revealed that HIV patients
supplementing with NAC saw a significant improvement in their immune function. Another study indicated that NAC may hinder the
replication process of viruses like the flu, potentially shortening lifespan
and symptoms.
Detoxifies the Liver and
Kidneys
NAC
also aids in the body?s detoxification process. Doctors regularly use NAC to
combat kidney and liver damage for people who have overdosed on the pain
relievers.
Aids Brain Function and
Psychiatric Disorders
Learning,
memory and brain function may also improve because NAC regulates levels of the
neurotransmitters glutamate in the brain. Healthy levels of glutamate in the
brain are necessary for normal brain function, but excess levels of glutamate
and low levels of glutathione can be damaging for the brain, which may magnify
mental health conditions like bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder
and addictive behavior. Although doctors do not recommend NAC as a sole
treatment for mental health conditions, promising research shows that NAC may
help decrease symptoms of bipolar disorder, depression and OCD.
Boosts Fertility
NAC
may also improve fertility, especially amongst men. Infertility issues in men
often stem from low levels of antioxidant activity and free radical destruction
in the fertility system. In one study, 468 men struggling with infertility
improved their fertility by supplementing with 600 mg of NAC and 200 mcg of
selenium and significantly improved fertility levels over 26 weeks.
Supports a Healthy Microbiome: Your gut is where the majority of your immune system resides. So to have a healthy immune system, we need to have a healthy gut.
NAC May Help Prevent Heart
Disease
Oxidative
damage can destroy heart tissue and lead to head attack, stroke, and other
cardiovascular issues.
Because
NAC is helpful in reducing oxidative stress, it can be useful in preventing
oxidative damage to tissues of the heart. This gives it great potential to help
in the treatment and prevention of heart disease.
NAC
also improves blood flow and circulation by increasing nitric oxide production
and acting as an anti-aggregate. An anti-aggregate prevents platelets from
clumping together to form a clot in your blood vessels.
GLYCINE
Nutritional
Facts About Glycine: Glycine is the second most widespread amino acid found in
human enzymes and proteins, which is why it has roles in nearly every part of
the body.
It?s
one of 20 amino acids used to make protein in the body, which builds the tissue
that forms organs, joints and muscles.
Of
the proteins in the body, it?s concentrated in collagen (the most abundant
protein in humans and many mammals) and also gelatin (a substance made from
collagen).
Some
of the most attractive attributes include promoting better muscle growth,
healing the lining of the GI tract, and slowing down the loss of cartilage in
joints and skin.
People
who are ill, recovering from surgery, taking medications that hinder certain
metabolic processes or who are under a lot of stress can all use extra glycine
for recovery.
According
to some research, glycine can be used to help lower symptoms in people
suffering from conditions like ulcers, arthritis, leaky gut syndrome, diabetes,
kidney and heart failure, neurobehavioral disorders, chronic fatigue, sleep
disorders, and even certain cancers.
Some of the many health
benefits of glycine include:
Helping build lean muscle
mass
Preventing sarcopenia
(muscle loss, muscle wasting or deterioration)
Playing a role in the
production of human growth hormone
Boosting mental performance
and memory
Helping prevent ischemic
strokes and seizures
Protecting skin from signs
of aging or cellular mutations
Protecting collagen in
joints and reducing joint pain
Improving flexibility and
range of motion
Stabilizing blood sugar and
lowering risk for type 2 diabetes
Improving sleep quality
Lowering inflammation and
free radical damage by increasing glutathione production
Reducing risk for certain
types of cancer
Building the lining of the
gastrointestinal tract
Producing bile salts and digestive
enzymes
Helping reduce allergic and
autoimmune reactions
Boosting energy levels and
fighting fatigue, stress and anxiety
Helping produce red blood
cells
Helping control symptoms of
seizures, schizophrenia and mental disorders
