A nice example of a
World War Two Royal Air Force
Bomber Command
Ground Crew's/Aircrew's
5C/369
Internal Cockpit Inspection Lamp
Clearly marked on the base
LAMP INSPECTION CN MARK
REF 5C/369
COMMERCIAL PATT
it also bears the
Air Ministry Crown Stamp.
The blackened-copper (?) hand-held
lamp has a combined hook & winder on the base
to wind back in the long cloth covered cable
and the lamp body measures approx 6" long
or 8" with the winder extended.
The original war-time bakelite round plug marked
CRABTREE
PATENT
is still in situ as is the small bulb.
The lamps, manufactured by
Lucas of Birmingham
were designed to plug into
the 12-volt electrical system inside the bombers' cockpits,
so in addition to being used by ground-crew on aircraft maintenance,
RAF bomber Navigators & Radio Operators
could also make use of these lamps
to illuminate their instruments whilst airborne on night raids.
Not sure if this could be made to work again,
but in the absence of that knowledge it is
offered here as a cracking non-working souvenir of the
RAF's Heavy Bombing Campaign of WW-II
