"In space... it's very, very dark."

Intergalactic private eye Millie Nocturne is down on her luck. First she ends up on the block at a shady auction and then is forced to partner up with Kain Blueriver, the cape-obsessed, psi-blade-bearing master of the Lost Ship Swordbreaker, and his lovely sidekick Canal, the saucy holographic image of his ship's master computer. And, as she is up to her ears in debt, Millie takes any job thrown at her to keep the bill collectors at bay. Unfortunately, these assignments come from the mysterious Rail Claymoore and are so dirty that no one else would take them.
