THE TREACHERY OF TRICKS  (Francis Menotti) -- published by Paper Crane 2012

I love when I find a magician that I had not heard of, pop the DVD in the player, and the magician is fantastic.   Francis Menotti is fantastic -- his show is thoughtful, thought-provoking, includes some serious moments of amazement, as well as a really weird, erudite and warped sense of humor (which I tend to like).

These two DVDs include almost 3 hours of video -- you get to watch Menotti's live show (really well shot and produced -- not just somebody standing at the back of the room with one camera -- and you get the usual explanations of some effects, and also you get interviews with Menotti where he shares aspects of his creative process.

It is hard to describe the show, other than to say it includes routines that you will love, and then (if you are like me) you will think to yourself, the routines are so unique and personal to Menotti that probably no one else could pull them off -- not because they are technically difficult.  You will be able to do the tricks -- but I doubt anyone would consider "stealing" his presentations -- not because they are bad, but because they are so good and so personalized to Menotti's on-stage persona.  Wow!  Talk about a good way to make sure no one does your act!

I could go on an on about how impressed I was by Menotti as both a creator, thinker and performer,  But let me just thumbnail one routine:

Menotti introduces a deck of cards, shows that it is in New Deck order.  he compared the ordered deck to his own brain.  Then he shuffles the deck, and as the deck is mixed, his brain become mixed up -- his patter sentences start to be scrambled syntax.  (Understandable, but all mixed up, just like the deck.)   Then magically, the deck begins to re-sort itself, and Menotti's words also become closer to normal syntax.  In the end, the deck is magically back to new deck order and Menotti's brain (and speech patterns) also return to normal.

Other standout routines include an xray version of the Razor Blade swallowing trick, an add a number routine that successfully ends with the prediction of a word (that then becomes the correct number), lots of really good audience participation, and a gory card on back that leave the performer dead on the stage at the end.

NOTE: to be clear, Menotti does not explain all the routines in his show, and dos not explain the ones I just mentioned.  But if you watch him perform these, you will be inspired to think out of the box on your own routines.  He does explain the following effects:

  • vivid- the audience accurately “predicts” the type of coin and its date
  • wyrd- turn predictions on their head, anytime, anywhere
  • pieces of nothing- a completely new premise for coin magic
  • two sides of every coin- a quirky 3 coin routine for any situation
  • imaginary coins- a clean 3 coin vanish with devious new moves
  • sync- cards find their mates, in increasingly more amazing way
  • The interviews and explanations are invaluable information for any magician who wants to create a show that is more than just a series of tricks.  Menotti takes the idea of the show into a more cohesive and theatrical realm.

I usually say check out the photos of the DVDs' back covers for details, but this one just has Dali's lobster phone -- another reference to a strange (but effective) routine in the show.
