Offering 5 7/8 x 9 ¾ song sheet of “Ellsworth’s Body Lies Mouldering in the Grave, as sung by the Philadelphia Fire Zouaves, Tune – ‘Brothers, will you meet me.”  Johnson, Song Publisher, No. 7 N. 10th St., Phila.  The song sheet contains all seven stanzas of the song.  Black and white. Very fine eagle and American flag cartouche.

ELMER EPHRAIM ELLSWORTH (April 11, 1837-May 24, 1861) was the first conspicuous casualty and the first Union officer to die in the Civil War.  Col. Ellsworth was killed while removing a Confederate flag from the roof of the Marshall House in Alexandria, VA.  Before the war, Ellsworth led a touring military drill team, the “Zouave Cadets of Chicago.” He was a close personal friend of President Abraham Lincoln, who eulogized him as “The greatest little man I ever met.” After his death, Ellsworth’s body lay in state at the White House.

Song sheet would frame nicely. Nothing on verso. Toning and some chipping, as visible in scan, at the top.
