A delightfully impish tale set in Indiana in the 1940s, based on the 1983 film of the same name, A Christmas Story takes its inspiration from the writings of humorist Jean Shepherd and his story about 9-year-old Ralphie, whose only wish for Christmas is to get a Red Ryder Carbine-Action 200-shot Range Model Air Rifle. But everyone to whom he mentions it (his mother, his teacher, and the local department store Santa) has the same negative answer – “you’ll shoot your eye out.” With a sparkling score by Broadway newcomers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (highlights: “Ralphie to the Rescue!,” “The Genius on Cleveland Street,” ”You’ll Shoot Your Eye Out”), the show details Ralphie’s life with his parents, his school companions, and his brother Randy, and is peppered with his many flights of fancy about why he needs the BB gun and how useful it will be. This new cast album is sure to become a perennial favorite, in and out of the Holiday season.
