This one of a kind carving was handmade by Kwakwaka'wakw artist Gilbert Dawson in 2023. The mask is carved from traditional red cedar and displaying clean cuts and lovely detail. Paint has been beautifully applied to accentuate the features of the Wolf. The piece has also been adorned with cedar bark rope. WOLF The Northwest Coast of British Columbia is home to a number of whale species, including the distinctive Killer Whale. They are important crests and feature prominently within oral traditions and First Nations art. They are associated with strength, dignity, wealth and long life. They are recognizable within the art via their blunt nose, flared nostrils, teeth, a blowhole and prominent dorsal fin.

GILBERT DAWSON Wolf, viewed by some nations as a transformer, is a popular image within crest and shamanic art. It is respected for its strength, agility, intelligence, and capacity for devotion. Due Wolf’s hunting prowess, particularly successful hunters often claim it, as a spirit helper or guide. Wolf is also a prominent image within warrior societies, due to its fierceness, and is a central figure within ceremonial activities.
Wolf is easily recognizable by a long
snout, prominent canine teeth, and tall ears.
A tongue may also be depicted, often curling upwards. Wolf imagery may also include Killer Whale
motifs, hinting at the connection between these two animals.
