George Washington Bacon was born in New York State in 1830. After moving to London, he acquired Edward Weller's English county steel plates, which had been used for the Weekly Dispatch Atlas, as a means to establish his map publishing business. Bacon expanded and improved the plates before publishing them in 1882 as the New Large-Scale Ordnance Atlas of the British Isles. He acquired John Wyld’s map business in 1892. His company, G.W. Bacon and Co merged with that of W & A.K. Johnston in around 1900/
