Superman: Legacy is a new movie to be written by James Gunn is scheduled to be released on the 11th of July, 2025, and will focus on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing, the first part of what Gunn has titled the "Gods and Monsters" phase of DCU films. Gunn added: "Superman: Legacy is the true foundation of our creative vision for the DC Universe. Not only is Superman an iconic part of DC lore, he is also a favorite character for comic book readers, viewers of earlier movies, and fans around the world. I can't wait to introduce our version of Superman who audiences will be able to follow and get to know across films, movies, animation and gaming."
But which version? All eyes have turned to All-Star Superman by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely -- and James Gunn even recently tweeted that he was reading it for breakfast while he is writing the film script. "I'm in the middle of it, I'm having a great time doing it." Gunn's also included images of the series' cover art in many of his tweets and visual presentations across social media. Indeed, much of DC Studios' creative direction appears that it will be well-informed by Grant Morrison's collective work at DC ---including Action Comics, Batman, Batman and Robin, Doom Patrol and Superman & The Authority.
The latter four-issue limited series returns Morrison to both Superman and The Authority, a super-team Morrison helmed only briefly as a writer and, much more recently, which James Gunn announced will be the next live-action feature film following Superman: Legacy for the new DC Studios. But where the storyline from Superman & The Authority -- which saw The Man of Steel form a new Authority team as an alternative to the Justice League -- lead directly into a twelve-month story-arc in Action Comics, the series (or ideas from it) could very possibly serve as a natural bridge between the first two films in the new cinematic Universe.
UPDATE: New social media posts from DC and industry insiders suggest a Superman Vs The Authority film may be in the works as the natural sequel to both Superman Legacy and The Authority. While this has yet to be confirmed, these announcements make plenty of sense to us -- and definitely support the fact that
Superman & The Authority is a sound Spec Key for fans and collectors anticipating Gunn's unfolding plans for the new DCU.
