A 19th century Chinese solid silver rose water sprinkler - a sprinkler of typical bulbous form with elongated neck and flower motif nozzle or rose, the body heavily chased with vignettes of flowers and foliage in stepped reserves, palm leaves to the neck and flower motifs to the stepped foot and applied base (this is attached by a nut and bolt fixture from underneath the foot). Rose water sprinklers were typically used in welcoming guests into a home and in some marriage ceremonies.  This is a fine example of Chinese craftsmanship, in terms of not only execution, but the overall quality, scale and weight.

- marked to the base 88 MK and Chinese script for a currently unidentified maker from Canton (active 1865-1910) - total weight 256grms - overall dimensions height 302mm, diameter 75mm - c.1880 China

In good condition with light surface scratches from normal use to the silver, and age related wear. Condition notes: one minor dent to base of the neck (as photographed) and slight unevenness around the rim of the base so is not completely round but stands well and does not rock, and  the top edge of the flower head of the sprinkler has been slightly bent, all as shown in the photographs and do not detract from what is a great piece of Chinese export silver. Many, if not all of these, could be rectified by a competent silversmith and there is also some oxidisation which can be further cleaned or polished by the new owner if so desired.
