A vintage French Special Edition 2000 handled champagne saber, an instrument specially made for sabrage which is a technique for opening a sparkling wine bottle with a sword, used for ceremonial occasions. The champagne saber features a blunt blade (a sharpened edge is unnecessary because in sabrage it is the impact that is important) and a large wooden handle decorated with brass accents. The blade has been stamped on one side with French text for "Champagne Saber".Special Edition 2000
The champagne sword comes with its original Leather scabard.

The technique of sabrage became popular in France when the army of Napoleon visited many of the aristocratic domains. It was just after the French Revolution and the saber was the weapon of choice of Napoleon's light cavalry (the Hussars). Napoleon's spectacular victories across all Europe gave them plenty of reason to celebrate. During these parties the cavalry would open the champagne with their sabers. Napoleon, who was known to have said, "Champagne! In victory one deserves it; in defeat one needs it", may have encouraged this.
CONDITION:
The champagne saber is in very good vintage condition with some light surface marks to the blade.

Blade: 11.5" Long x 1.5" Wide (29,5 cm x 4 cm).
