Simultaneous 2-track recording, simultaneous 8-track playback

The DAW's UNDO/REDO function allows you to undo and restore a previous recording, and its battery-powered operation allows you to record simultaneously in the field. External microphones and line-level sources can be connected directly to the R8, and even if those sources are not available, recording can be done with the R8's built-in stereo microphones in a minimal setup. Take Your Own Approach to Music Production

The R8 also features a built-in pad sampler and rhythm machine, with eight velocity-sensitive pads that can trigger up to eight different samples, drum sounds, and loops. The unit also comes with over 500 built-in drum patterns.

In addition, samples and loops can be created from pre-recorded tracks and perfectly synchronized using quantize and time stretch functions. The pad sampler offers three playback modes for each pad: repeat, gate, and one-shot, and the built-in audio sequencer also allows step input for creating perfectly timed drum parts.

Flexible control over DAW

As a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) software user, it is natural to want to mix with hardware rather than a mouse. The R8 provides powerful support for this, as it supports Mackie Control emulation and functions as a control surface for all major DAW software, including Cubase, Logic, Ableton Live, and Sonar. Fader operation, transport, autolocate, and status button control allow for perfect mixing in real time. In addition, five function keys are available for assigning functions, which can be used to set marker points and control editing functions.

Various functions that go one step further

The R8 is equipped with dual input terminals with combo connector specifications, allowing connection of various sources with balanced or unbalanced connections from XLR terminals or standard phones. All inputs support mic/line/instrument levels, and input 1 also supports Hi-Z for direct connection of guitars and basses with passive pickups. Both +24V and +48V phantom power are supported, and both inputs can be powered for external condenser microphones. The outputs are TRS phone jacks for balanced connections and a headphone jack with dedicated volume control.

The R8 operates on four AA batteries, which can be alkaline or rechargeable nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) batteries. Battery life is long, up to 5 hours or more, even when recording continuously using alkaline batteries. With the included AC adapter (AD-17), it can be powered from an electrical outlet. It can also operate on USB bus power when connected to a computer via USB.

Audio data recorded by the R8 can be directly recorded to SD/SDHC cards up to 32 GB, allowing up to 100 hours or more of single-track recording. SD/SDHC cards do not require motorized drive like tapes and disks, so they are resistant to vibration and do not suffer from mechanical noise.
