VTG Transylvania Oxen & Wagon Hand Made Ceramic & Carved Wood  Folk Art UNCOMMON

Highly decorative, featuring lots of character and detail. Wagon / cart can be filled with fruit and used as a unique presentation basket.

These pieces are at least 23 years old but were never used. Please see the provenance explanation below.

Hand made and carved by artisans in Transylvania, as both nostalgia for and homage to rural and pastoral life, thus joining poets, writers, musicians, and painters who have celebrated pastoral life through their art.

One such Romanian art piece with international recognition is Nicolae Grigorescu's rendition of an oxen pulled wagon (oil on canvas at the end of the 19th century).

The two oxen / bulls / cows in this listing's ensemble are large and made of ceramic - they measure approximately 12"L x 7"H and weigh between 2lb 13oz - 2lb 15oz each.

The wagon / cart and accessories are carved out of wood and connected with metal chain and pins. The wagon weighs around 1lb and measures approximately 13"L x 9.5"W (widest) x 6"H. Length does not include the wood "tongue" connecting it to the oxen.

You will receive one of the 2 ensembles available in this specific design of oxen and wagon. As they were hand made and unique, there might be slight differences in some of the details versus those captured in this listing's pics.

They will be shipped dis-assembled but can be reassembled very easily. We included reassembly steps in the last 2 collage pics.

We only have 4 similar ensembles in our store (2 in this listing and 2 in another listing).

**** About the provenance of this item ****

This item is part of a group of hand made textiles, hand carved wood, hand blown glass, and hand made ceramics that was acquired about 23 years ago from Romania (most from the Transylvania region) for a store our family operated in Ohio. Eventually, the store closed, and all remaining merchandise ended up boxed up in storage in a relative's climate controlled warehouse, until our eBay store received them just recently. While we may have more than just one piece of a certain style, for the most part: 1. they will be only a few at best; 2. each of them will be unique; 3. once they are gone they cannot be replenished. All these items reflect, one way or another, some aspect of the Romanian cultural heritage - and its appreciation for the creativity, uniqueness, imperfections and charm of hand crafted wares over the monotony and volumes of the assembly lines.
