Иллюстрации воспроизводятся по роскошному подарочному изданию 1901 года. А.Ф.Маркс к работе над ним привлек большую группу талантливых художников, работавших по единому замыслу; руководили творческим коллективом искусствовед Петр Петрович Гнедич и живописец Мечислав Михайлович Далькевич. Художники сделали 365 замечательных иллюстраций: В.А.Андреев, А.Ф.Афанасьев, В.И.Быстренин, М.М.Далькевич, Ф.С.Козачинский, И.К.Маньковский, Н.В.Пирогов и Е.П.Самокиш-Судковская воспроизвели бытовые сцены, Н.Н.Бажин и Н.Н.Хохряков - пейзажи, а Н.С.Самокиш - буквицы и виньетки
