V2 Premium Bearings vs Standard

Our Standard Bearings are ABEC 3 and designed specifically for RC Cars, they are better than the original factory bearings of most RC manufacturers. Our V2 Premiums are ABEC 7 which means they are more precise with closer tolerances, the individual components such as the balls are manufactured to a higher standard, the races are within .001mm. From our testing, we have found that the V2 Premiums remain smoother for longer, outlasting any standard bearing with less chance of a failure, they are made to the highest standard that our manufacturer can produce. The V2 Premium range of bearings are used by our racing team which consists of several current and past Australian Champions including Kyle McBride, Ryan Maker & Chris Sturdy, these guys rely on our product when travelling to compete internationally at the highest level.

Pro Racers V2C Kit

This kit was developed with the assistance of our Team Drivers. We found that Ceramic wheel bearings do not last as long as steel bearings, due to the hardness of ceramic balls and the conditions that wheel bearings endure, premature wear of the steel rings was found to be common in comparison to our V2 Premium Steel Bearings. Another factor is that wheel bearings generally spin 4 times slower than the driveline (dependant on gear ratio’s), Ceramic bearings are most advantageous at higher speeds, therefore there is less advantage to using them in the wheels. This was the result for both onroad and offroad cars across different platforms, offroad cars are more harsh on wheel bearings in terms of the impacts they face when landing jumps and riding through rough surfaces, onroad cars endure less bumps but more high speed cornering which places high loads on the balls and races, in all cases we found that ceramic bearings would prematurely wear compared to V2 Premium steel bearings when used in the wheels. Ceramic Bearings perform very well in spur gears and diffs with no performance or longevity issues. Another advantage, the V2C Kit is cheaper than a full ceramic kit.

What kit should I choose?

This comes down to personal preference and budget, as a beginner / club racer you would be best off selecting the V2 Premium kit, all round this is going to be durable and perform well, lasting longer than factory bearings or our standard bearing kits. If you are competing seriously and looking for every advantage possible, the V2C Kit is the way to go, all of our Team Drivers run the V2C Bearings.

Ceramic Bearings

Ceramic Bearings can run faster than all steel bearings due to the lower centrifugal force generated by the ceramic balls, ceramic balls are lighter and harder than steel, the speed increase for Ceramic Bearings is 30 – 40% with adequate lubrication. Ceramic Bearings are less subjected to ball skidding under initial acceleration / torque. This allows the bearing to last longer and be far more reliable. Low heat expansion allows the bearing retainers to last longer.

Plaig Bearings are a stronger, more reliable bearing with greater heat resistance and superior life to the standard factory bearings. These bearings are available individually from our ebay store. We have all other sizes of bearings for RC cars and sell a large range of complete kits. If you can’t find the right size please contact us.

Bearing Materials

SAE 52100 Chrome Steel Balls

• Higher hardness for longer life ratings

• Low cost for high performance

• Good for temperatures up to 150°C

• Poor corrosion resistance (if left exposed)

This is the standard steel for most ball bearings. It is harder than stainless steel and gives greater life ratings. It also has superior low noise qualities to standard 440 grade stainless steel. Chrome steel actually has a low chromium content and is not corrosion resistant, all Plaig bearings are assembled with Shell AF2 Oil as chrome bearings require an oil coating on the exterior surfaces to protect against corrosion which can contaminate the inside of the dry bearing. Chrome steel can tolerate continuous temperatures of up to 150°C. Above this temperature, bearing life is significantly reduced.

PTFE Heat Resistant Rubber Seals

• Excellent corrosion resistance to water, salt water and most chemicals

• Good high temperature performance.

• Non magnetic

• Only semi-precision grade is possible

• Maximum temperature 260°C

The PTFE Seal is rubber bonded to a metal washer. The inner lip of the seal rubs against the bearing inner ring to provide an effective seal against smaller particles such as dust and moisture while preventing lubricant leakage.

Bearing Retainer / Cage

Retainers keep the balls evenly spaced around the raceway preventing ball to ball contact and thus allowing higher speeds. They also help to retain grease around the balls and raceways. For greater accuracy and to prevent any additional friction, it is important that the retainer is not allowed too much radial movement.

Our standard bearings use a Carbon Steel Crown Retainer.

Why Buy Plaig Bearings

Plaig Bearings have been put to the test since 2008, with over 500,000 Bearings being sold across Australia. Our bearings have been tested under the harshest conditions, by the best RC Drivers, Fishermen, Engineers, Cyclists and Hobbyists.

There are many theories on what makes a good bearing, but putting it to the test in the harshest conditions possible is the only way to practically assess whether a bearing will stay in one piece or not. The best RC drivers with the best cars will not sacrifice a trip interstate or even internationally, to have a bearing failure during a critical race.

The best Fishermen do not want a Reel failure whilst reeling in that big fish. Many professionals put their trust in our Bearings. Value for money is a priority for Plaig Bearings, providing exceptional quality for reasonable prices is what we do best.
