This is a scarce set of an early work on world geography, "Pomponii Melae - De Situ Orbis Libri III" by Pomponius Mela (the earliest known Roman geographer who wrote around 43 A.D.). Published in 1748; 2nd edition, thus (stated). Complete set in two volumes. Original full vellum bindings as issued. The fold-out map is present in volume I - the loose translation of the map title is "The World Drawn from the Mind of Melae, the Most Christian Geographer of the King." Both volumes contain illustrations and vignettes. "De Situ Orbis" is considered to be the only formal treatise on the topic of geography in classic Latin.
