MS-65+ NGC 1911-D $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle
The 1911 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle is considered to be one of the most beautiful coins in American history. The design on the obverse was left almost entirely up to sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens before his death in 1907, and he intended for these coins to be a tribute to both American liberty and craftsmanship. He did not live long enough however to see his vision come into fruition; his assistant Fred Hoadley did much of the work that remained after Saint-Gaudens died, and the coins were finally released to the public in 1911.
