The main design is of a man performing some unknown action with what appears to be a tripod, and beside it a large amphora. The Greek "ton athenethen athlon" means "the prize from or given by Athena". Tripods and amphorae were both often given as prizes in contests, and this presumably refers to some mythological story familiar at the time.
