The coal tender car has magnetic couplers and plays train sounds when the coal load on top is pressed and automatically turns off minutes later. It operates on 2 standard "AAA" size batteries (not included). The Lionel / Learning Curve trains and cars are all 100% compatible with Thomas wooden railway sets as well as all other sets with standard 1" wheelbases (like BRIO, IKEA, Melissa & Doug, Imaginarium and others).
