The Black Bamboo. This has to be one of the most popular and best known of all the bamboo plants available in the UK. Whilst ultimately classed as a Phyllostachys Bamboo which are generally invasive types, Black Bamboo will not, for want of a better phrase run amok in your garden.  In our opinion they lie somewhere between invasive and clumping and generally in our experince they lean more towards the latter. The jet black canes reach around 4 or 5 metres in height and are covered in masses of lush green dainty leaves. The best situation for the black bamboo is in a good, rich soil that does not dry out too readily but also does not have a tendency to waterlog over the winter months, Black Bamboo also grows well in containers keep in mind they will need moving to a larger pot every 2 or 3 years. To ensure good strong growth plants in pots must be well watered at all times, rainfall is usually enough during the winter months when the plant is dormant but is never enough during the summer months when the foliage acts as a canopy therefore most of the rainfall is defelected away from the pot and rarely penetrates the roots. To help keep the plant looking lush and healthy feed with a general purpose high nitrogen feed between the months of May and September. In good circumstances you can expect your black bamboo to add about a third to its height and spread annually, and if it is really happy even more. To achieve the blackest canes possible, plant in full sun and enjoy the wait as the canes turn from a lush green to an ebony black.
