Catalinbread Katzenkonig Guitar Effects Pedals

Katzenkonig. the Cat King.

Catalinbread combines the Tone Bender MkII, which represents vintage UK fuzz, and the Rat distortion, which represents the distortion sound of the 80s, to create a "fuzzy, singing, tight distortion " is now complete. It can be used with a variety of settings, including humbuckers, single coils, clean amps, and crunch channels.

The Katzenkonig offers an impressive response range. It collectively covers from singing tones to tight, harmonic-rich crunch and even fuzz mayhem.

This wide range of sound creation can be simply controlled with only four knobs.

Controls

Input: Controls the input sensitivity. Set it low when the output of the pickups is high or when using a wah pedal, and set it high when using low output pickups or when you want to push the sound beyond its limits.

Gain: Sets the gain of the second gain stage. Unlike most fuzz and distortion gain controls, this one mainly sets the "negative feedback. This means that the gain setting can be wider than the normal gain control.

Filter: This is the final stage of the tone. It can be set from smooth and creamy tones to bright and cutting tones. This knob allows you to instantly create the sweet spot you want.

Volume: This is the standard volume control that adjusts the overall volume. It can be set widely from muffled to roaring.

Quick Start

Start by combining the Katzenkonig with a clean amp with the Volume and Filter at 12 o'clock and the Gain and Input at minimum.

Even at the lowest gain setting, you will get the great tone of the Katzenkonig. And if you move the Filter knob, you will notice a new sensation unlike many fuzz and distortion controls.

Next, let's move the Gain and Input controls. Both controls allow you to adjust the intensity of the distortion, but they work differently. If you leave one at minimum and move only one of them, it will be easier to see what you are doing with that knob. And if you set both higher, you open the door to a world dominated by fuzz, sustain, and saturation.

Once you get a feel for the pedal's characteristics, try using it with a variety of amps and guitars as well.

Details of each control

The Input control works like a volume control at the front of the circuit. It attenuates the guitar signal and directs it to the fuzz section. It also affects the input impedance of the circuit, which is useful when combining with various effects. When the impedance is matched, the response is higher.

This is especially useful when using a wah pedal as the front end of a Katzenkonig. Many fuzz pedals, due to their low input impedance, reduce the sweep range of a wah pedal placed in front of them. Try connecting a wah pedal to the Katzenkonig and adjusting the Input control to see what effect it has; many wah pedals will barely "wah" when the Input is set to maximum, but you can see the effect when the Input is turned down from there. You can see the effect as you turn the Input down from there. Set it to the response you feel best.

The Gain control is more intuitive. Move it up or down and set it where you feel good. Also, don't be afraid to "turn down" the Gain on the Katzenkonig. The Gain control is tuned to produce a pleasing sound even when set low, with distortion at the 12 o'clock mark and fuzz at the lower setting.

The Filter control is located at the last stage of the circuit. It controls the overall tone of the Katzenkonig. This control is a development of the Filter control on the Rat distortion, which makes the sound darker and creamier when turned clockwise, and brighter when turned counter-clockwise. Counterclockwise makes the sound brighter. Basically, the sweet spot is around 12 o'clock, but you can experiment with a wide range of settings depending on the tone you need.

The volume control allows a wide range of volume settings, from midnight practice to loud and proud on stage.

Katzenkonig connection order

The Katzenkonig creates great tones when used by itself, but you will find new possibilities when you combine it with other pedals. There is no "right" order for connecting effects, and it is best to experiment with different orders to find the one that best suits your taste. These instructions are just a guideline to get you started.

The Katzenkonig, if considered as a type of fuzz, is more commonly found at the front of the signal chain. However, the Katzenkonig also has the effect of an Input control, which allows you to place a wah, filter, or booster in the front. If you want to add a Katzenkonig to a basic distortion, such as an overdrive, try placing the overdrive after the Katzenkonig. Modulation effects such as chorus and phaser, and reverb effects such as delay and reverb will have a more pronounced effect if placed after the Katzenkonig.

Power supply for the Katzenkonig

The Katzenkonig is powered by a standard center-minus DC adapter or a 9V battery. The adapter can be used from 9VDC to 18VDC.

Battery operation gives a slightly softer response to picking. The higher the adapter voltage, the louder and different the tone will be.

Guitar

Fuzz pedals, especially those with classic circuits, are sometimes incompatible with high-output pickups such as humbuckers, but the Katzenkonig's repeated tuning of the circuit and the inclusion of an input control have resulted in a sound that works well with both humbuckers and single coils, and is easy to handle. The result is a sound that is easy to handle, and works well with both humbuckers and single coils. Humbuckers sound great when the Input and Gain are turned down a bit, and single coils sound great when the Input and Gain are turned down a bit. With single coils, a wide range of sounds can be created, from light overdrive to classic fuzz tones.

Amplifiers

In general, the Katzenkonig works especially well with simple tube amps without master volume or the overdrive channel of standard amps.

It may work a little less well with super high-gain amps.
