Begann es im Juli 1954, als Elvis Presley seine zuckende Energie auf Bill Monroes königlichen Bluegrass Walzer Blue Moon Of Kentucky verwendete? Oder ein paar Jahre später, als Carl Perkins Dixie Fried aufnahm und sich in die Irre führte, dass nördliche Popstationen es spielen würden? Oder war es 1964 "Beatles For Sale" oder 1966 Rick Nelsons überraschende Selbstneuerung? Oder die frühe International Submarine Band Singles? Oder die Zeit der Byrds zwischen oder dem alten John Robertson?
Country Rock war im Wesentlichen kalifornisch, während sein Vorgänger, Rockabilly, im Wesentlichen südlich war, aber beide waren Reaktionen auf die damals vorherrschende Musik. Beide schienen Isaac Newtons drittes Bewegungsgesetz zu beweisen; dass es für jede Aktion eine gleiche und entgegengesetzte Reaktion gibt. Jede Rockabilly-Single war ein Fingerstoß angesichts des selbstgefälligen, perfekt geformten Pop der 1950er Jahre. Country Rock (oder "Langhaarland", wie es die Fachpresse nannte) war eine Reaktion gegen die Selbstabsorption der Psychedelie. 1968 - im Jahr des Country Rock wurde es eine Sache - veröffentlichte Iron Butterfly'In-a-Gadda-da Vida'. Der Titelsong verbrauchte eine ganze Seite der LP, und ohne Drogen war er unhörbar. Gleichzeitig gab es eine entmaterialisierende Bewegung zurück ins Land - ein Versuch, jedes Stück Eden zurückzuerobern, das nicht überpflastert war.
Country Rock hat nicht versucht, Nashville zu ersetzen oder neu zu erfinden. Das waren Zeiten, die so bitter polarisiert waren wie unsere eigenen. Country-Musik, wie sie in Nashville gemacht und gespielt wurde, verspottete jeden Tag Hippies, genauso wie Hippies Nashville verspotteten. Zwar streckten sich in Nashville ein paar Subversive nach der Subkultur aus, so wie die Byrds berühmtermaßen versuchten, die Kluft von der anderen Seite zu überbrücken, indem sie die Grand Ole Opry spielten, aber der Golf war zu tief. Am Ende war Gram Parsons' Traum, dass das Country-Radio seine Singles zwischen George Jones und Loretta Lynn platzieren würde, nicht mehr als ein Traum. Country Rock wurde auf das neu geprägte Underground FM Rock Format zugeschnitten, nicht auf AM Country.
Mitte der 70er Jahre waren die Ecken und Kanten dieser Musik, die auf die widerspenstige Vergangenheit von Hillbilly und Rockabilly zurückgehen, auf die glatten kommerziellen Gleichungen der Eagles reduziert worden. Diese CD und ihre Begleiter erzählen die Geschichte des Country Rock von unserem willkürlich zugewiesenen Moment seiner Geburt um 1966 bis 1975. Es ist mehr oder weniger chronologisch sequenziert, so dass Sie einen Eindruck davon bekommen können, wie sich das Genre entwickelt.
Noch ein letztes Wort: Wenn ein paar deiner Lieblingssongs nicht hier sind, gibt es mehrere Gründe. Vielleicht wussten wir nichts von ihnen. Vielleicht mochten wir sie nicht. Oder, viel wahrscheinlicher, das Ursprungsetikett würde uns keine Lizenz geben.
