Up for sale is a complete Philadelphia, Denver, Clad Proof San Francisco & Silver Proof San Francisco 1965 - 1998 Washington Quarter 109 Coin COMPLETE Set (over the years 1965 - 1998). This set includes ALL of the regular business strike quarters minted from 1965 (when clad coinage began) through 1998 (when the year after, in 1999, the State Quarter Program began) as well as ALL of the Proof/SMS Clad proofs minted from 1965 through 1998 and Silver Proof Quarters minted from 1992 to 1998. This set includes ALL of the regularly issued quarters from 1965 to 1998 inclusive of several varieties.
Most all of the business strike coins have been sourced from US Mint sets which tend to have a higher quality than original bank rolls. Regular mint sets were not issued in 1965 - 1967 nor from 1982 - 1983. Note that there were no 1975 dated quarters as the 1976 bicentennial design was used in both 1975 and 1976. The 3 SMS (Special Mint Set) “proofs” from 1965 - 1967 came from the special mint sets released over those years (there were no regular proof sets from 1965 - 1967 as the mint wanted to “punish” coin collectors for “hoarding” silver coinage from 1964 and beyond). The clad proofs from official US mint proof sets covering the years 1968 - 1998 (there was no proof quarter in 1975) are all directly from US mint proof sets.
In 1992 the US mint began minting full silver proof sets for the first time since silver coinage ceased in 1964. There were 8 90% silver proof coins minted from 1992 to 1998 prior to the start of the State quarter series in 1999. In addition, the mint released a 40% Silver Proof in a special bicentennial proof set in 1976 and that silver proof quarter is included in this set. The silver proofs in this set (1976 40% and 8 1992 - 1998 90%) are also all directly from official US mint sets.
There are number of interesting coins in this set to include:
1) 1965 - 1967 quarters with no mint marks (and therefore there are only one quarter each in the years 1965 - 1967). After the run on silver coinage in 1964 and the changeover in mint production from mostly silver production (prior to 1965) to clad production (1965 and thereafter) the US Mint decided to “punish” collectors who were “hoarding” silver coinage. As a result there were no mint marks on coinage from 1965 through 1967, there were no regular mint sets these years and no regular proofs either. In lieu of regular proofs the mint issued Special Mint Sets (SMS) with coins that were not quite proofs.
2) The 1965 - 1967 “SMS” or special mint “proofs” mentioned above which are not quite proofs.
3) The 1976 “S” business strike 40% silver quarter issued in a special bicentennial mint set as well as the 1976 "S" proof 40% silver quarter also issued in a separate bicentennial mint set. These two coins are the only 40% silver quarters issued by the US mint to date.
4) Both the Type 1 and Type 2 proof quarter varieties from 1979 and 1981. In the proof sets in both 1979 and 1981 the mint utilized two different “S” mint marks with the Type 2 coins having clearer “S”’s.
5) 1982 P&D and 1983 P&D Uncirculated quarters - In the years 1982 and 1983 the mint did NOT produce mint sets where many higher quality uncirculated coins are sourced. Therefore uncirculated 1982 and 1983 P&D quarters are relatively scarce and relatively expensive (current pricing 1982 P $35, 1982 D $15, 1983 P $15 and 1983 D $15 or $80 for those quarters alone if purchased individually).
This is a nice quality set of Washington Quarters for a very reasonable price especially given the uncirculated 1982 P&D and 1983 P&D coins and all of the proofs included (with varieties as well). Included in this set are the following 108 Business Strike, Clad & Silver Proof Uncirculated coins:
