Released in 1974, the Roland RE-201 Space Echo is one of the most popular effect units of all time. In production for nearly 15 years, its rhythmic and warm sound character stimulated the creativity of many musicians, including guitarists, producers, and manipulators.

The RE-2 is a compact pedal that recreates the Space Echo at an unprecedented level. BOSS, which is well versed in the original, has recreated the sound and behavior of the original, and the RE-2 is a condensed version of the Space Echo that musicians will feel comfortable with.

The legendary "Space Echo"

In the 1970s, when tape-based echo machines were the norm, the Roland RE-201 Space Echo was a unique machine. The three playback heads are spaced at equal intervals to create a rhythmic echo. The complex interaction of numerous factors, including the friction generated by the tape, the recording/playback mechanism, and the behavior of the motor, creates a pleasing echo sound. The built-in SPRING REVERB and sound can be mixed to create a one-of-a-kind world view. In addition, the analog preamp section adds the essence to bring out the charm of the connected instruments, and many musicians have become captivated by the sound of Space Echo.

Condensation of the charm of a masterpiece

After many years, BOSS began development of the new Space Echo. In addition to the vast amount of data accumulated over the years, BOSS has thoroughly reanalyzed several individuals, including a rare RE-201 in mint condition, which is kept in the company's own vaults. We have carefully examined the friction generated on the tape, the recording/playback mechanism, motor behavior, preamplifier characteristics, tape condition, and the SPRING REVERB stretched in a Z-shape, and have completely clarified the sound mechanism, which had not been clarified before. The RE-2 is a compact effect pedal that recreates the sound and behavior of the Space Echo at an unprecedented level, allowing you to place it anywhere on your pedalboard without worrying about space.

Thoroughly Designed

The RE-2's MODE knob allows you to select from 11 different combinations of playback heads, while the SPRING REVERB and ECHO LEVEL knobs are independent, allowing you to control the balance between the two at will. The WOW & FLUTTER knob controls the natural modulation effect caused by the unstable rotation of the magnetic tape, the smooth pitch change when the REPEAT RATE knob is turned, and the strong oscillation when the INTENSITY knob is turned up, making this a truly authentic It is a true Space Echo.

The deeper appeal of the Space Echo

The RE-2 has many features that the modern musician needs: The REPEAT RATE can be extended to twice the length of the original. By pressing and holding the pedal, you can control the tap tempo function and TWIST, which makes the echo sound violently undulate. The input is stereo compatible, so you can take full advantage of the expansive reverb effect. The CARRY OVER on/off switch on the top of the pedal makes it easy to set whether or not the echo sound is left when the effect is turned off. Direct sound can be selected from an uncolored dry through or the RE-201's preamp-simulated sound. The CTL/EXP jack allows you to use an external footswitch to control tap tempo or TWIST, and an expression pedal to control multiple parameters simultaneously.
