Santons de Provence Maryse di Landro Signed Terracotta 12" FIREWOOD MAN Figure

Wonderfully detailed expression and clothing. Santons (little saints) come in different sizes but the larger 12 inch tall
by 5 inch wide figures would be a lovely presence in a  substantial nativity scene on a sideboard or display area.
This could be the beginning of a fabulous Christmas collection or addition to your existing set!

The peasant is carrying two bundles of firewood and his axe is tucked inside his red waistband.  His corduroy pant
is soft and supple. No breaks or chips on the exposed terracotta face or hands.  The clothing is clean seemingly
with no spots or tears.

These figurines are produced in the Provence region of France representing various characters from Provencal
village life.  There is a signature of M. Di Landro engraved on the base behind his heels (see last photo).

This form of terracotta craftsmanship since the early 1800's lives on in Aubagne France where the skills are passed
down within families.  Visitors to Aubagne can see these processes in real life by visiting Santons Maryse Di Landro,
a functioning santon workshop and museum.

Enjoy!
