5Pointz was a historic building located in Long Island City, Queens, New York City, that was widely known as a hub for graffiti art. The building was a former factory complex, which had been converted into a space where graffiti artists could legally showcase their art. For over a decade, the building served as a center for urban art and culture, attracting artists and visitors from around the world. Graffiti artists were allowed to paint the building's exterior walls, which were covered in colorful and intricate murals. The building was also home to artist studios, art galleries, and other cultural spaces. In 2013, the building's owner, Jerry Wolkoff, announced plans to demolish the building and replace it with luxury apartments. This decision was met with widespread protest from the local community and the global graffiti art community. Despite efforts to save the building, the demolition was carried out in 2014. The loss of 5Pointz was seen as a major blow to the graffiti art community and sparked discussions about the value of urban art and the need for greater legal protections for graffiti and street art.
