On the morning of February 12th 1947 a fireball was witnessed over the Sikhote-Alin mountains south east of the Soviet Union. It exploded in the air and perhaps also on the frozen ground. 15 expeditions of 30 men recovered 30 tons of material (largest mass 1745 kg). Sikhote-Alin is the biggest witnessed fall, its pre atmospheric mass is estimated at 70-100 tons. The impact site has become a national monument.
