"Boss" Tweed Ring, NY Politics of 1860's - Check Signed by Mayor John T. Hoffman


The $100 Check paid to a William Wood is signed by 1866 New York City Mayor and 23rd Governor of New York (1869-1872), John T. Hoffman.  

Hoffman was connected to the Tweed Ring, which ruined his political career, despite a lack of evidence to show his involvement.  

He is still to date the last New York City mayor elected Governor of New York.  

The check is also signed by Comptroller Matthew T. Brennan, also connected to the Tweed Ring.  

The check has some small cuts / tears within the body of the check and some light wear and discoloration.  

Boss Tweed Ring -  William M. "Boss" Tweed, Democratic Party member and Tammany Hall leader, organized a handful of men who controlled New York City's finances and used them to dispense jobs and contracts in return for bribes and political support.  

The reported amount of resources handed out by the Tweed Ring has been reported between $30-200 million.  

Some of the names associated with the Tweed Ring were, John T. Hoffman, Matthew T. Brennan, A. Oakley Hall and Richard B. Connolly to name a few.
