mostly on comets, with some on meteors, Yerkes Observatory, and general astronomy, 

including a complete German Translation of Richard Proctor's "Our Place Among Infinities"

 
Description: Various Authors ASTRONOMIE: TRAVAUX DIVERS. Various scientific organizations in the UK, US, Russia and Germany, 1800s, 6 x 9.5 in., Several illustrations and maps.
 
Condition: Bound in quarter leather over marbled boards with gilt title on spine. Minor edgewear. Pamphlets securely bound inside. There are several engravings and foldout illustrations, intact except for the Littrow map accompanying the articl on  the comet of 1556 which is split at the fold (see photos). Minor age yellowing but no foxing. Owner's ink title pages introduce each pamphlet. Otherwise the pamphlets themselves are clean, well bound, and unmarked. Overall a VG++ collection. 
 
Information: A collection of astronomical pamphlets and other publications from the later half of the 1800s, including a complete 219 page translation into German of Richard A. Proctor's "OUR PLACE AMONG INFINITIES". Most of the pamphlets are reprints from scientific journals in the UK, France, Russia and Germany, and are mostly in French and German with some English as well. Included are an article on the origin of the comet of 1556 by Kar von Littrow, several articles on comets by Th. Bredichin; an article from the Astronomical Society of the Pacific on Yerkes Observatory (with several photos and a plan of the observatory); an article by John Hartnup on the Great Comet of 1858 (in English, published in Liverpool); and an article on the Bolide of May 14, 1864. Scarce ephemera in a nice binding.
