COLLECTIONS AND HOARDS
Most people who do a little dealing all started as collectors and are usually still collectors. It is a passion that has driven us to find ways to feed our obsessions and still make a little bit of money. There are many fine dealers across the country and countless numbers of small time or "vest pocket" dealers in every state.
In most states, in the past, it was nearly impossible to find coin stores, so we all started the same over mail, from back of comics and likewise. We joined mail auctions, and tried to discern the best way to accumulate our treasures. Sometimes a grandma or grandpa would help, sometimes a local store owner would save us some change. In order to afford our new treasures we would trade with others who collected as well. I still remember the old teacher who lived several miles away and how he would sit and show the 8 year old boy different old coins and we would ooh and aah together.
Word of mouth got around, and then some people would sell you small collections. Dad would give me a ride to town and I would buy this small collection with my saved allowance and promises to pay my Dad back.
Well the internet has opened up a lot of doors, but many people still prefer to sell their coins face to face. Most are pretty sharp on prices, so the margins have gone down, and the expenses crack your skull. Gas is high, time is valuable.
