Nike Inc. was founded in 1964 as a sportswear manufacturer headquartered in Beaverton, Oregon. It was initially established as Blue Ribbon Sports by Phil Knight and Bill Bowerman, two partners who wanted to create high-quality sports products to equip athletes with. Over the following fifty plus years, Nike has grown into one of the biggest companies in professional sports gear and apparel, dominating in basketballs, running shoes and soccer cleats. 


Nike first made its mark as a shoe company specializing in lightweight running shoes made with waffle sole design technology developed by Bill Bowerman. The waffle sole’s gripping action on multiple surfaces gave runners better traction and improved their performance on the track. This technology quickly gained the attention of a wider audience beyond just athletes and Nike’s first major contract for mass production came from Japan's Onitsuka Tiger shoe company in 1971. 


The first truly iconic sneaker that put Nike on the map was the “Moon Shoe” designed by Bowerman himself which debuted at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich . The Moon Shoe can be considered as one of individuals styles that made Nike become what it is today - an internationally recognized symbol of athletic lifestyle apparel. Following this success, other technological advancements were quickly incorporated such as Nike Air cushioning system which helped improve cushioning within each step during running activities with pressure sensitive air chambers embedded within the midsoles of certain shoes like the “AirMax series” released throughout 1995-96.  


In 1979, shortly after competing footwear brand Adidas had introduced their own line of fitness apparel clothing named “Adidas Originals” , Nike released its own label of sportswear called "The athletics department" Later shortened to “AD”; AD clothing ranged from tank tops to polo shirts and t-shirts to shorts & sweatpants – all designed for comfort during intense physical activities including basketball or track events where breathable materials provided improved ventilation during peak performance moments . Competing alongside competitors like Reebok and Adidas , AD can now be found everywhere from duty free stores or universities across various countries offering an extensive range of colors & styles .   


Since then, over time Nike has gone further in continuing its innovative product range further pushing boundaries offering tailored collections specially designed suits for different kinds sporting activities such as Football/Soccer , Basketball and Running .
