Double-stack cars (or well cars) have been continuously improving ever since their inception in 1977, when the Southern Pacific Railroad and Malcom McLean, an American businessman, teamed up with AFC Industries to design the first double-stack intermodal car. McLean, who was a leader in containerization, saw many benefits of this streamlined process, including reductions in cargo handling and improved transit time. And as predicted, shipping containers could be transported more economically with the invention of double-stack intermodal cars.

Nowadays, intermodal shipping containers that transport by ship are transferred by massive container cranes and placed into intermodal cars our model. Each intermodal car features a depressed "well" to allows for additional clearance. This well also lowers the intermodal car's center of gravity, leading to a more stable car. Wells, which are usually 40 feet long, are made to hold a single 40' shipping container or two 20' shipping containers.

The 17" Intermodal Car from Menards is our longest car to date! With its low-riding well, this car looks just like the real thing! In addition to the highly detailed walkways and braking system, this intermodal car also features TTX markings and unique car numbers, so no two cars are the same! Also included are the brightly colored Evergreen and "K" Line containers!
