Selective
traps for Asian hornets Vespa Velutina are a simple and effective way
to get rid of these pesky insects. We have several different types of
traps in our offer, but they all work on the same principle. The
traps are designed to catch the Asian hornet, but do not allow other
types of insects to enter, or other insects have the opportunity to
fly out of the trap through the holes in the trap. Also, insects
cannot drown in the trap.
Manual:
Pour a little sweet
solution, such as honey, syrup or sugar water, onto 1/3 of a kitchen
sponge (not included). To increase the effect, a piece of honeycomb
with honey, a little dark beer and bait with pheromone (3-5ml) are
also suitable. Hornets will be attracted to the sweet solution and
enter the trap through the funnel shape. Once inside, they won't be
able to get out and will become trapped.
How to place hornet
traps
Traps for Asian hornets should be placed lying down if
possible (Asian hornets with the nest hole on the side, European
hornets and wasps from below) in places where hornets are often
found. This can be, for example, around beehives, near fruit trees or
near garbage cans. It is recommended to place at least one trap per
10 hives.
Traps should be placed in places where they are
protected from rain and wind.
How often to check hornet
traps
Hornet traps should be checked regularly, at least once a
day. If you find hornets in the trap, remove them and dispose of
them.
Our experience is virtually zero unwanted catch. If there
is an unwanted catch (a bee, ...), put the trap in the freezer (for a
few minutes) until all the insects stop moving, open the trap and
remove the unwanted catch (a spoon works well), put the insects you
want to save outside, to recover and return the trap to the freezer
for an hour or two to kill any remaining insects. Then refill the
trap with bait and leave a few dead hornets in as well, as this also
seems to attract more hornets.
How to use the red and blue
nozzles
Each trap comes with red and blue nozzles that fit the
cones. These are designed to virtually eliminate unwanted catch.
Use
a red nozzle in the spring. In the spring, the mothers are out
foraging for their first nests. Each queen killed kills the entire
nest, so it's especially important to have traps out when the first
queens emerge. The queens are bigger than their workers, so the jets
are bigger to let them in. However, European hornet queens are also
outside and the nozzle is small enough that they cannot get inside.
All other insects that might be attracted to the trap (including
bees) are either small enough to easily pass through the mesh body of
the trap or too large to pass through the nozzle.
Asian hornet
queens do not leave the nest again until their first brood of workers
emerges. The workers are slightly smaller than the queens, so we can
switch to the blue nozzle.
Switch to the blue nozzle 6 to 8
weeks after the first queens emerge. These nozzles allow Asian hornet
workers to enter the trap, but not European hornet workers, which
also emerge at this time.
Security
Be careful when
handling hornet traps. Hornets can be aggressive and may sting
you.
Wear protective clothing such as long sleeves, pants and a
hat when checking hornet traps.
If you are stung by a hornet,
seek medical attention immediately.
