T. Becket, London, UK, 1781, apparently the second printing of  irst edition of this comedy by the famous Shakespearean actor and Shakespeare promoter. Fair condition hardcover, 75 pages, 1781 printing, sewn binding is intact, but 1st and last pages are loose and well-worn boards are present but separated from text block, spine cover absent. Printed in the author's lifetime and during the play's run at the Theatre-Royal at Drury Lane, London. Though it is superficially styled as a comic take on the absurdities of high society in the era, scholars such as Gillian Skinner have convincingly argued it was intended as a satire on the various light entertainments, such as recreations of historical events, which, in Garrick's view, threatened the success of more serious theatrical efforts such as his own. This copy needs some tlc, but is fundamentally sound and a genuine artifact of the era.
