very nice example of a Gallic War
Uniface gold Stater easily recognisable
with its uniface (plain obverse) and
galloping horse to right on the reverse
These coins are an historically
interesting issue as they struck them in
hast by the Ambiani in c.60-55 BC whom
were resident in the Somme Valley,
northern France, to finance the war
against Julius Caesar in Belgic Gaul. At
some point massive quantities of these
Staters (emergency war-money) found
there way in to Britain across the
Channel, no doubt by mercenary soldiers
in order to finance further resistance
against Julius Caesar in 55 BC. The
coins were so numerous soldiers would
often find a hollowed out flint in order to
store their money in. A fine example of
one of these 'flint money boxes' was
recently detected at a metal detector
rally, where the plough had smashed it
open spilling out many of the Gallic War
