At the time that this book was published, the author was a resident of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. The book took 6 years for him to complete. It was published in time for the 140th anniversary of the raid. Only 500 copies were printed. Not only does it cover the strategic perspective of the raid, it also examines the raid from the viewpoint of civilians, using letters, diaries, and recollections of descendants of people affected by the raid. It follows Stuart's travels from modern-day West Virginia into Maryland and then into Pennsylvania. Stuart and his troops traveled 120 miles in 3 days, much of it in the rain and eluded 20,000 Union troops. They passed through Mercersburg, Chambersburg, St. Thomas and Scotland before moving on to Adams County. A total of 30 hostages were taken, as well as more than 1200 horses.

A rare and informative book about a fascinating bit of Civil War history.
